Pressure test my thought

So working on changing out carpet floor to laminate and when I got to the subfloor it seems like the previous owner did 3/4” plywood with 1/2” particle board I’m wanting to remove the stained pieces of particle board and was wondering thoughts on wither or not I should just forgo the 2nd layer or if I should add 1/2” osb or plywood instead? On one hand the entire floor is like this so I’m guessing if I went with just the plywood I would have to either 1) lay my baseboards a 1/2 lower on all the walls or 2) more extensive leveling On on side I’m doing a more extensive remodel, so all the walls on the floor will be brought down to the studs What is the benefit of doing 2 layers? And why would the previous owners have built it that way? This home was built in 2000 and has a finished basement under the main floor submitted by /u/scary_kitten_daddy [link] [comments]
