Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Cinematic Universe kicks off in big blockbuster fashion this summer with Superman from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies’ writer-director (and now co-head of DC Studios) James Gunn. In a new trailer for Superman released Wednesday, we get to see the scope of Gunn’s sunnier, more earnest take on the Man of Steel — and just how difficult it can be to be Superman.
The new Superman trailer starts with Clark Kent — as Superman — being interviewed by his Daily Planet colleague Lois Lane. And the intrepid reporter gets right down to the thorniest part of being an alien superhero who represents… America? American values? Humanity? Even legit stopping a bloody war by yourself is up for debate when you’re Superman, and clearly not everyone in the rebooted DCU is happy about Superman’s role as global protector. From Lex Luthor to the other superpowered heroes and villains of Superman, it seems a lot of people have it out for the son of Krypton. But at least Superman has a cute dog and a mom who will shine his Superman boots.
Superman — previously known as Superman: Legacy — stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen. It will also star Krypto, Superman’s dog. Rounding out the cast are Edi Gathegi as superhero Mister Terrific, who Gunn has said “has a big part of the plot,” Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka Engineer. Some of those characters are expected to reprise those roles in upcoming DC Studios projects like The Authority. We already knew that Fillion, Merced, and James Gunn’s brother and frequent collaborator Sean Gunn — the new DCU’s Maxwell Lord — will appear in season 2 of Peacemaker.
Superman lands in movie theaters on July 11.
The new DCU officially soft-launched this past December with the Max animated series Creature Commandos. After Superman, DC fans can expect new live-action projects based on Kara Zor-El/Supergirl with next year’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie, and the Green Lantern Corps with the down-to-Earth TV series Lanterns. Beyond that, a movie based on Batman villain Clayface and a proper sequel to Matt Reeves’ The Batman — which will exist outside of new DCU canon — are in the works.
