Blizzard Entertainment has made Overwatch 2’s Tank hero, Doomfist, temporarily unavailable to play in ranked matches, to the delight of fans online.
While an official reason was not given by the developers, many fans online speculate it was in part due to a bug that made the character overpowered.
Doomfist is no stranger to bugs due to the unique nature of his kit as one of the most mobile characters in the game, even after his rework from a Damage to Tank role. However, recently, some players on Reddit started noticing that Doomfist was particularly strong in the past couple of days.
Blizzard has not issued an official statement on the reason why the character was locked from competitive modes. Some online users speculate that the Tank hero was removed because of a bug with his abilities.
By cancelling his ultimate ability with Power Block, Doomfist could gain a free empowered punch. This mechanic could be repeated indefinitely and significantly increased his damage output in-game, making him particularly dominant in matches, while being frustrating to play against.
As of writing, Doomfist is still unavailable to play in ranked games, but can be played in quickplay and arcade modes.
Does Overwatch 2 have a Doomfist Problem?
There were plenty of fans online who welcomed the news of Doomfist’s temporary removal from the game. Which has sparked debates within the community on whether the hero has become the latest problem character.
From Roadhog dominating the earlier days of Overwatch, to Brigitte ushering in the GOATS meta, Doomfist may be amongst the next characters to join the game’s list of most hated characters.
Hero bans were introduced in Season 16, alongside other changes such as Stadium and the new hero Freja. In a blog post online called “Weekly Recall: Hero Bans”, Blizzard Entertainment revealed the most frequently banned characters in Overwatch 2.
According to the data, Sombra was the most highly banned hero with 85% on PC and 93% on console. This was followed by Zarya with 59%, and Doomfist was the third most frequently banned hero at 43% on PC.
Only time will tell if patching out the overpowered bug will be enough to quell his rampage, or if his return will spark demands for further changes and nerfs.
