TL;DR

  • Teams are competing for the first Worlds qualification slot and a major share of the $2 million prize pool.
  • After winning the MSI title in 2024, Gen.G are returning to the tournament as the favourites.
  • Considering the team’s growth, Anyone’s Legend has the potential to be the main protagonist of this MSI.
  • T1 has struggled to compete with the other Korean powerhouses, but they showed up when it mattered in the decisive series against HLE.

MSI is kicking off in one week’s time, so it’s the perfect opportunity to rank the 10 teams heading into the second international tournament of the season.

With the first Worlds qualification slot up for grabs and a major share of the $2 million prize pool, the rankings will give you a better idea of what to expect from each team competing. Some are expected to fight for the trophy, while others will arrive in Vancouver to gain valuable experience.

MSI power rankings

1. Gen.G (LCK #1)

Gen.G arrives with a perfect 18-0 split, but their playoff run wasn’t without hurdles. In the qualification series against Hanwha Life Esports, Gen.G managed to reverse sweep the opponent, clinching the LCK first seed.

After winning the League of Legends MSI title in 2024, they return to the tournament as favourites. With incredibly carry players like mid laner Chovy and ADC Ruler and solid veterans in Canyon and Kiin, Gen.G has everything needed to repeat the feat this year. Anything less than a top-two finish would probably be considered an underperformance.

2. Anyone’s Legend (LPL #1)

Anyone’s Legend has the potential to be the main protagonist of this MSI, considering the incredible growth of the team during the season. Consistently fighting for the top in the LPL, AL was unquestionably the most consistent team in the league, and defeated BLG fair and square twice in playoffs.

The team is spearheaded by their mid-jungle duo of Tarzan and Shanks, but AL is a very balanced team that is able to pilot different team comps and playstyles. It’s clear that head coach Tabe has worked his magic once again, and it would be no surprise were AL to make a deep run at MSI.

3. T1 (LCK #2)

T1’s path to MSI was anything but smooth. Consistently struggling to compete with the other Korean powerhouses, T1 showed up when it mattered in the decisive series against HLE, dominating them with a 3-0 win.

While the victory was probably a combination of different factors working in their favour, the team’s recent form is light years ahead of what was shown in the first few months. Expect them at least to be fighting for the top four.

4. Bilibili Gaming (LPL #2)

BLG was another team that struggled for a large part of the season, but they were still able to make it to MSI by reaching the LPL finals. The team was able to stabilise its performance with the presence of the new jungler Beichuan, which sets a good foundation for the team to improve and grow. However, BLG doesn’t look as strong of a contender internationally as in previous seasons, hence its lower ranking here.

5. Movistar KOI (LEC #1)

Movistar KOI captured the LEC Spring title in impressive fashion with all players stepping up in the decisive final series. The team was able to improve its macro game while maintaining its early-game aggressiveness. It will be tougher to replicate this against the best Eastern teams, but if Karmine Corp’s performance at First Stand was a good start for the LEC, there are good enough reasons to believe EU will continue to do well at internationals.

6. FlyQuest (LTA North #1)

If the LEC has the best teams constantly swapping the crowns, the same thing is happening in North America, with FlyQuest emerging to the top of the league once again.

After a strong end to Worlds last year, FLY will have the chance to prove its worth as one of the Western teams that can go toe-to-toe with the Asian units. It will be a tough ride, however, given that Gen.G will be placed on the same side of the bracket, but FLY has already shown they are the kind of team willing to come up with innovative solutions to close the gap.

7. CTBC Flying Oyster (LCP #1)

CTBC Flying Oyster (CFO) is the only team that has made it to two international tournaments this year, and given their performance so far, they might become the only one to make it to all three internationals in the 2025 season.

Led by veteran players like Junjia and the bot lane of Doggo and Kaiwing, CFO has found a good balance between its players, which has allowed them to maintain a high floor and consistency. The question will be whether they can raise their ceiling at MSI. If they were able to do so, this might be the underdog of the tournament.

8. G2 Esports (LEC #2)

If there is one team that might not be in great form, it’s G2. The performance in the Grand Final against MKOI showcased some of the team’s limitations, such as the lack of impact from its jungle-support duo in the early-mid game. Individual player performances have also been rather inconsistent throughout the spring split, so it’s not just a team identity issue.

There is still the hope that G2 can show up when it matters, like they did in previous years, but considering the competition at the moment, it’s tough to rate them higher.

9. GAM Esports (LCP #2)

GAM Esports battled through a tough playoff gauntlet to earn their place at MSI, coming to a close five-game series against CFO in the final. Vietnamese teams are known for their early game aggression, which can upset some teams in the tournament, but they are also known for being rather volatile in performance. You can be sure jungler Levi will be there to give his team a chance to fight the top dogs, but considering they will have to fight in play-ins, the hopes for a bracket stage finish are slim.

10. FURIA (LTA South #1)

FURIA managed to pull off the upset by taking down paiN Gaming in the final rematch, thanks to a few impressive late-game teamfights to turn the games in their favour. The LTA South, however, struggled to take down the LTA North teams in the first split, which raises concerns about their ability to fight the top teams from the other regions. Unless proven otherwise, FURIA is expected to struggle at MSI and will likely be among the two teams to be eliminated in the play-in stage.

Conclusion

The LCK teams continue to set the benchmark for international competition as both Gen.G and T1 are expected to make deep runs in the tournament. Despite the poor showing from the LPL at First Stand, the Chinese teams have the potential to be contending for the top spots, especially Anyone’s Legend.

There is more hope for Western teams to contest the top Asian teams, but teams will be required to come up with innovative strategies and drafts in order to throw curveballs. If that were to fail, then teams from the LCP might also pull off unexpected upsets.
