Subterra is a pretty unique game (if you've never played the Steam World Dig series), and it can be daunting to figure out what you're actually supposed to do. To help you progress through the mines and biomes, we made this robust yet simple guide to help you along the way. If you're just starting out with Subterra, you should find everything you need in this Ultimate Subterra Beginner's Guide. Whenever you can, upgrade your Backpack and Pickaxe. Not only that, but every time you start working on a new upgrade, make sure you pin the materials needed to the side (talk to the Backpack Upgrade and the Blacksmith NPC and select the pin option to do so). Working towards your next upgrade is also a great way to tell how deeper into the mines you need to go. How to fast travel in Subterra Screenshot by Destructoid One very convenient feature in Subterra is your ability to quickly go back to the surface and back into the mines again. Simply select the "To Surface" option above your health bar (bottom left corner). You can also use the "To Mines" option while on the surface, but it won't teleport you back to the exact same location you were while in the mines. Later into the game, you'll also unlock the ability to fast travel using portals. How to rank up in Subterra Screenshot by Destructoid Ranking up in Subterra is similar to prestiging in video games. During each rank, you have a level cap you need to reach. When you do, you pretty much have to rank up in order to proceed. This resets your level back to 1, gives you some Chrono Shards, but it also raises your level cap a bit. Every two levels, you also get an extra ability slot. Your level cap is always: Your current rank X 5. Currently, the max rank is 11. While it may seem annoying to level up your character from the beginning every time you use this, you still get to keep all your items, and you'll eventually get to grow stronger, so try not to let it bother you too much. How to get Chrono Shards in Subterra Screenshot by Destructoid Chrono Shards are something of a premium currency in Subterra. Even though you can buy them using Robux, you can also earn a bunch just by playing the game, and here's how: Ranking up - Each time you rank up you get a few Completing all Daily Quests (and certain regular Quests) Completing certain Achievements Redeeming codes Daily Login bonuses Loot them from chests Chorono Shards are used to draw new ability cards from the Chrono Crystal, which give you new passive abilities. Where to find Copper / Tin / Iron / Silver / Gold / Platinum in Subterra Screenshot by Destructoid If you can't find a certain type of raw ore needed for the next upgrade, it usually means you need to go deeper. The order in which you find the ores are as follows: Copper - Tin - Iron - Silver - Gold - Platinum - Cobalt - Chromium - Titanium - Wolframite However, if you fall down pretty deep and see Gold, but you are looking for Iron, you've gone too deep (so climb back up a few steps). How to get Gems, Shards, and Crystals in Subterra Screenshot by Destructoid Unlike raw ore, Gems, Shards, and Crystals are pretty rare and somewhat difficult to find. They can appear anywhere on the map. The most effective way to find them is to open any chests you come across and hope you get the one you need inside. This worked for us better than looking for them by digging. Which item should I always take with me in Subterra? Screenshot by Destructoid Wooden Ladder. Seriously, we can't count the number of times we found something cool but couldn't reach it because we didn't have a Wooden Ladder or a few of them. Always carry 5 - 10 of these, just in case. What is the Collapse in Subterra? Screenshot by Destructoid The Collapse in Subterra is when the entire mine resets and players need to dig back down again. Because Subterra is a multiplayer game, any player can dig almost any block until eventually there would be nothing left to dig through. To prevent this, the Colapse resets the entire mine, along with all blocks, chests, and everything else. That's all there is to it. Have fun digging and progressing in Subterra.
